Harvard University Announcement: No tuition and no student loans
by Harlem World Magazine
Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard’s president Lawrence H. Summers said, “When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. Woooooow way to go Harvard!!!!!!

…What I would’ve given to have this happen six years ago.
My divorced parents, combined, make less than $40,000 a year - now - probably less than $30,000 at the time, about $15,000 individually, and that’s not considering my siblings. (We won’t go into the fact that I was legally emancipated from them at 16, because for some reason financial aid in the United States DOES NOT CARE unless you’re able to financially support yourself above the poverty line, or have kids, or are married - I wasn’t.) I had to scrape together what low-income aid I could find and managed to go to a local university that didn’t offer good programs I wanted to study in, but it’s still the best opportunity someone on my income level can get. Normally? People from my income level, and from my background never even go to college. Almost 40% don’t even graduate high school.
Every single little thing we do in this nation that benefits low-income kids is a victory. Getting them into top-tier universities and actually giving them a chance? HELL YES.
I wish so bad I’d been given this kind of chance. Go Harvard for hopefully giving more people that shot.
