There is no part of this diatribe that is not amazing or 100% true.
SAY IT AGAIN FOR ALL TO HEAR
The line I saw a while ago that seems relevant: “There is no such thing as unskilled labor, only undervalued skills.”
I can’t find a counterexample.
I never realized how true this was until I started this retail job. I’m a sales associate for a single department for a big box store. My job includes knowing intimate details about products across ¾ our store. For one department. Let that sink in for a minute. I have to be able to inform customers everything about basically every product we sell, and answer questions about whatever we have, whatever we DON’T have, what policies we have (there are a LOT and they vary from product to product), and whatever the hell else they might buy. And be on my feet all day, and not just standing around but constantly moving and approaching customers, AND I have sales pressure because if I don’t close enough sales I’m going to get yelled at and/or fired. And all this with a smile on my face, no insurance (because I’m only part time), and no benefits whatsoever.
I make $10 an hour for this. And they call me lucky, because that’s above minimum for my “easy job”.
