fave things about growing up chubby:
- feeling like the ‘unattractive’ friend
- being called the ‘wingman’
- acting as a personal shopper for your smaller sized friends
- not being able to fit into any of the popular clothing brands
- “oh shut up, you aren’t even plus size!!”
- “you have a really cute face though!!”
- trying to wear baggy clothes so they don’t cling to your body
- “nice rolls”
- earthquake and tsunami jokes
- gym class. everything about gym class
- developing a bad posture from trying to appear smaller than you are
- not getting asked to school dances, or even to dance once you’re there
- needing a special uniform/costume in dance/team sports
- not wanting to eat in front of anyone
- having what is a serious eating disorder turned into a joke
- being compared to elephants/whales
- little to no positive media representation
- low self confidence, depression, and anxiety
- “concerned” looks/comments from family members
- having people assume you don’t care about yourself/body
- hoarding snacks to eat in secret
- being stared at when you go into particular stores
- buying mens clothing because the sizes are more generous
- crying in the change room
- having doctors assume every problem in your life is due to your weight
- “so are you trying to lose weight?”
- “are you sure you want to eat that?”
- “just try eating less!!”
- avoiding looking in the mirror
- never letting anyone take your picture
Bonus points for growing up chubby in the South:
- constantly being overheated and miserable in summer, because you’ve had it drilled into your head that protecting others from having to see your grotesque flab is more important than dressing comfortably/safely for the weather
- people presuming the subsequent shortness of breath and sweating from overheating is instead because you’re obscenely out of shape (and commenting on it)
Goes just as well for dudes too. /sigh
